AIA Honor Award
The AIA Chesapeake Bay Chapter recently presented WGM Architects with the 2009 Honor Award for the design of the Sculpture & Arts Gallery Building at Annmarie Garden in Calvert County, Maryland.
Annmarie Garden is a 30 acre botanical and sculpture garden located near Solomons, Maryland. Owned by the Board of Calvert County Commissioners and operated by the Koenig Private Foundation, Annmarie Garden is associated with The Smithsonian Institution. This association enables it to exhibit several pieces of contemporary art from the Hirshhorn Museum collection in their outdoor sculpture garden.
Opened in 2008, the new building at Annmarie Garden houses two gallery/exhibit spaces of 6,150 SF and 3,230 SF respectively. Included are support spaces for administrative offices, a museum gift shop, a small café, and a classroom/lecture area. The building was designed following many tenets of a sustainable design philosophy.
The Honor Award was presented at the 2009 Design Awards Gala on December 5th.
The project was also a finalist in Construction Magazine’s 2009 Building of the Year Award in North America, and will be featured in the upcoming Real Estate & Construction Review-Eastern Seaboard Edition as a recipient of their Building of America Award.
